Prayers are a way to harness and gain spiritual energy. An analogy would be how we create and use electricity. Energy from a waterfall is harnessed using generators, monitored by people, transmitted through wires and used to power various things. Similarly, spiritual energy exists in space, is harnessed and brought down to temples, monitored by the gods and dispensed to the people praying. Depending upon the prayer, you can use the spiritual energy for different things.

Poosai are done by lighting poosai lamp/ camphor/ bathi (vilakku / karpooram/ voothubathi yetruthal ) and enchanting mantharam before the photograph of gods, guru / in temples / poosai room... on behalf of those, who send their details.
